The Right Keywords Sell

Keywords simply refer to words commonly used by web users when searching for various kinds of information on the internet. The right keyword density on a web page usually ensures a good placement in the search engine results. Keyword density is actually the ratio of a certain word being searched for against the total number of words included in your website. In other words, if a keyword occurs several times in a page containing thousands of words, you have achieved a high keyword density.

Knowing your target audience is fundamental in marketing. It is, therefore, fitting for search engine marketers to make sure that their SEO campaign puts emphasis on the right keywords or search phrases that they believe potential web visitors will use. How to do this? As in any vital project, brainstorming is crucial among the key people involved to determine the proper target market and find out their needs. In the same way, web marketing people need to fully discuss the search phrases or words that they feel will bring in more qualified visitors to your website. The keywords have to be relevant to your products and services. Perhaps, you can ask each of your staff to submit a list of important search phrases that describe your business and which may be possibly used by people in search engines.

After getting the lists from your marketing people, determine the top main keywords, create different variations and narrow down your list. From there, you can look into the search engines and find out which phrases are the most widely used by web users. If you’re not successful in this aspect, turn to some useful tools to help you expand your list of keywords.

Tools you can use

Try the “overture search term suggestion tool” which is free to use. You only need to type your main search phrases into the suggestion tool and it will then give a list of other popular search terms that contain the phrase you entered. The words will be listed according to their popularity and the tool will also inform you of the number of searches per month for each phrase. There are some problems, though, as this tool cannot distinguish between singular and plural and does not use the proper punctuation.

But there’s hope. The WordTracker is another tool you can use. It has a free version and a paid one which requires a subscription fee of $7 per day. If you plan to use for long, you can get discounts. Examples of the top ten keywords analyzed by WordTracker for the week beginning August 15, 2007 in order include play games, myspace, yahoo, google, ebay, music lyrics, play game, myspace.com, mapquest and youtube.

Meanwhile, the German firm Sistrix in its analysis of web page elements that lead to high Google rankings found that keywords in the title tag are vital, keywords in H2-H6 headline tags have an influence on rankings, keywords in bold and strong tags have a slight effect, websites using targeted keywords in the domain name had high rankings and the number of inbound links and the PageRank had a big influence on page rankings.

Follow these tips and your site will surely land in the top pages of the search results. Remember, keywords are it.
